Designing a Scalable Analytics Framework for a Consulting Firm

A leading consultancy working with health plans faced significant challenges in tailoring its analytics offerings to diverse client needs. The lack of personalization and scalability in their solutions limited their ability to deliver actionable insights to executive decision makers managing varied member populations across different geographies. This gap hindered their ability to effectively address payer priorities such as SDOH interventions, demographic-specific care, and regional health disparities. 


To address the consultancy’s challenges and elevate their analytics offerings, Akros Advisory implemented a rigorous, outcome-driven methodology tailored to meet the evolving needs of diverse payer clients. Our work focused on four critical areas: 

 

Strategic Assessment of Analytics Challenges

We began by evaluating the consultancy’s existing analytics capabilities and their alignment with payer client priorities: 

  • Reports lacked personalization, limiting their relevance to specific health plan populations and geographies. 

  • Scalability issues constrained the consultancy’s ability to serve diverse payers, particularly those managing large member populations with varying social determinants of health (SDOH). 

Our findings underscored the need for a framework that could adapt to payer-specific contexts and deliver actionable, high-impact insights. 

 

Tailored Framework Development

To address these challenges, we designed a scalable analytics framework focused on segmentation and actionable insights: 

  • SDOH Integration: Incorporated advanced segmentation by SDOH factors such as food insecurity, social isolation, and transportation barriers, enabling targeted analysis and interventions. 

  • Geographic Customization: Added capabilities to segment data by geography, from state-level views to granular zip code-level analyses. 

  • Member Demographic Insights: Enhanced the framework to analyze member experiences (CAHPS) by demographics, health status, and payer-specific metrics, ensuring reports aligned with the unique needs of each client. 


This framework allowed the consultancy to offer highly personalized insights tailored to individual payer contexts. 

 

Data Integration and Advanced Modeling

Recognizing the importance of actionable analytics, we introduced advanced data integration pathways and predictive modeling capabilities: 

  • Developed regression models to connect member experiences to Health Equity Index (HEI) interventions, providing measurable ROI narratives for health plans. 

  • Proposed integration pathways to unify disparate datasets, including member demographics, clinical outcomes, and SDOH variables, for deeper and more actionable insights. 

  • Built tools to visualize the direct impact of health equity initiatives on Star Ratings and cost containment, driving payer engagement and investment. 

 

Implementation and Scalability Roadmap

To ensure the framework’s long-term success, we delivered a clear roadmap for implementation and scaling: 

  • Prioritized quick wins by deploying the framework with high-impact payer clients managing complex member populations. 

  • Educated client teams on the logic behind the new designs and build confidence in engaging payers with data-backed recommendations.
